Guernsey gets set for a season of arts & culture

25. April 2012

Guernsey is getting set for a summer of arts and culture with several exciting events taking place during the island’s tourism season.

Opening proceedings will be the third Guernsey Photography Festival, running from 24 May to 22 June. This month-long photo-fest is comprised of indoor and outdoor exhibitions featuring the work of world-renowned photographers, as well as a range of community activities, workshops and seminars for all ages.

For 2012 the Guernsey Photography Festival will take the theme of ‘Journey’, with featured exhibitions including the work of Briton Mark Power, Frenchman Klavdij Sluban and Iran’s Kiana Hayeri. Work by Ricardo Cases, Bruno Boudjelal, Ivor Prickett and Anastasia Taylor-Lind will also be on show. Now a fixture on the European photography circuit, the festival has become known for the creativity and distinctiveness with which work is displayed across the island.

2012 sees the return of the biennial Victor Hugo International Music Festival (16-21 July), showcasing some of classical music’s leading talents as well as its brightest rising stars. The festival takes its name from one of the island’s best known residents, for it was during his exile in Guernsey that Victor Hugo was inspired to write and publish some of his most famous works, including Les Misérables.

Headline artists of the 2012 festival include BBC Proms piano star Benjamin Grosvenor and percussion virtuoso Dame Evelyn Glennie, who will take the stage at St James’s Concert Hall in St Peter Port on the evenings of 16 and 17 July respectively.

Widening the festival’s musical appeal, this year sees the introduction of performers in different genres. These include the exhilarating young French vocal group Ommm in the VH Festival’s first-ever Electric Night, US folk singer Pamela Wyn Shannon, and The Burning Bush, who take as their inspiration the music of worldwide Jewish communities, including Eastern European Klezmer rhythms and soulful Hassidic folk tunes.

Returning for a second year is the Guernsey Literary Festival (13-16 September), which explores Guernsey’s rich tradition of literature, folklore and history through writing, reading, prose and poetry. Venues across the island will stage exciting events for book fans of all ages and interests.

Among the world-class writers confirmed to appear at the 2012 literary festival are War Horse author Michael Morpurgo, Captain Corelli’s Mandolin author Louis de Bernières, and Marina Lewycka, writer of the publishing phenomenon A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian which has sold more than 800,000 copies in the UK alone.

Poet Roger McGough, presenter of BBC Radio 4’s ‘Poetry Please’, will be giving readings of his work, while there will also be a Charles Dickens commemorative dinner attended by the author’s great-great-great granddaughter Lucinda Dickens Hawksley and the highly-regarded recreationist Mark Wallis.

Other cultural events in Guernsey this season include:

Guernsey Festival of Comedy

Friday 25 May - Saturday 2 June

Nine days of cutting edge stand-up from UK and international comedians, comedy club evenings, classic film comedy, open mic nights and Edinburgh Festival previews.

 Guernsey Music Festival

Saturday 23 – Sunday 24 June

Returning to Guernsey after its successful launch last year, which saw it shortlisted for Best New Festival at the UK Festival Awards, the music and cultural two-day festival will take place at The Rabbit Warren and include more than 80 well known and high profile acts.

Guernsey’s literary heritage, rich and sometimes dark history, unique Norman-French dialect, and quirky folklore create a unique culture which feels very different to the UK, despite being just an hour’s flight away.

Travellers can fly direct to Guernsey from nine UK airports - Gatwick, Stansted, Manchester, Birmingham, East Midlands, Bristol, Exeter, Norwich (summer only) and Southampton - as well as sailing from Poole or Portsmouth. Return flights with Aurigny from Gatwick start at around £85 including taxes.

VisitGuernsey launches new e-brochure for walking enthusiasts

21. March 2012

VisitGuernsey has launched a new walking e-brochure to celebrate the Island’s miles of stunning cliff top paths, peaceful rural lanes and mild climate, which make it perfect for a walking themed break.

The new e-brochure includes everything needed to plan a visit to Guernsey with walking in mind - from events listings and videos for inspiration, to maps and practical travel information.

Whether it’s hiking along the coast, wandering through woodlands to a secluded sandy bay or exploring the flora drenched winding country lanes, the best way to discover Guernsey’s beautiful scenery and peaceful way of life is on foot.

The Island’s varied terrain and scenery has something to satisfy any interest and ability along its 28.5 miles of cliff top paths which wind around long sections of picturesque coastline. The west coast is flattish with sweeping beaches, while the south and south-east offer stiff hill ascents and superb views across to the neighbouring islands of Herm and Sark.

A highlight of Guernsey’s landscape are the Ruettes Tranquilles, a growing network of quiet country lanes where priority is given to walkers, cyclists and horse riders, with a top speed of just 15mph! Clearly marked, the Ruettes Tranquilles offer a chance to really explore Guernsey’s peaceful countryside and to get a sense of Island life barely touched by time.

And after a hike [or gentle stroll!] there’s the option to refuel at one of the many beachside kiosks or ‘Hedge Veg’ boxes scattered around the island, selling local produce such as Guernsey ice cream and fresh fruit and vegetables.

For those after a more guided ramble, Guernsey celebrates the outdoors during the Spring [5-13 May] and Autumn [8-16 September] Walking Weeks, with diverse programmes of themed walks.

From a wander around St Peter Port’s historic streets to a more vigorous coastal ramble to learn about Guernsey during the German Occupation of World War II, the series of walks on offer include a variety of lengths, routes and themes to suit any interest and ability.

As well as the downloadable e-brochure a variety of maps and walking guides are available for Guernsey, including the newly published ‘The Channel Island Way’ featuring walking routes for Guernsey and four other Channel Islands.

For more information on Guernsey, to download the new e-brochure and to see the Spring Walking Week programme visit www.visitguernsey.com/walking.

WHAT’S NEW

New this summer: Guernsey’s first eco-camping
A new educational and sustainable agricultural land project is launching in Guernsey in June 2011, aiming to offer guests a ‘true west coast experience’ that reconnects with the natural environment: WildGuernsey’s WildCamping will be the first eco-campsite and eco-accommodation on the island.

Guests have the option to stay at either personal tipis or canvas tents, choosing between: Barefoot Wildcamping (pitch your own tent in a private area amongst mature blackthorn hedges); Bare Canvas Comfort (with canvas tents uniquely fitted out); and Simple Luxury (just turn up and everything will be ready for you, including comfortable sleeping arrangements).

WildGuernsey will offer a choice of activities and tailored packages to its guests, such as WildSwimming, WildSeaForaging, WildSeaSnorkelling, surfing, guided walks, cycling, beach craft, fishing, and kayaking. A range of locally sourced products is also available, from sloe jelly, lemon curd and seaweed crisps to bath truffles, massage bars, hand woven gathered baskets and even wedding favours!

WildGuernsey will be an interactive farm experience, with demonstrations on how to live sustainably (e.g. solar heated showers, waste and product awareness, composting etc.), and will be car free, encouraging guests with incentives that promote the use of buses and bicycles.

WildCamping’s location is one of the most peaceful corners of Guernsey, with beautiful views out to sea and access directly to the beach.

NEW Launching this spring: The Channel Island Way
The Channel Island Way is a new island-hopping walking route and guide, which provides an appealing platform to explore the differing coastlines of the five largest Channel Islands: Guernsey, Jersey, Alderney, Sark and Herm.

Covering in total 110 miles across the five islands, the whole route could be done in 2 weeks – but the concept is why rush, take your time and explore them at your own pace... the further you walk, the more each island asserts its own charm and personality.
In addition to the pleasures of walking these dramatic and diverse coastlines, because of the size of the islands, the comforts of café, pub and restaurant are never far away. All stops in Guernsey and Jersey are about 3 to 4 miles apart, with public transport available to get back to the starting point.

You can fly into the bigger islands of Guernsey, Jersey and Alderney, but the smaller islands of Sark and Herm can only be reached by boat.

New Literary Festival the highlight of 2011 Guernsey calendar
The Guernsey Arts Commission is preparing for the island’s inaugural Literary Festival, set to take place from 12 to 15 May.

The Festival will celebrate Guernsey’s rich tradition of literature, folklore and history, stretching back to French master Victor Hugo who wrote many of his most famous works while living on the island. A number of acclaimed writers will be in Guernsey to participate, including Annie Barrows, co-author of the best-selling The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society.

‘Meet the Authors’ sessions, discussion groups, poetry performances, murder mysteries and children’s workshops are all part of the event, which takes place at venues across the island.

New permanent exhibition for Guernsey Museum
Guernsey Museum is adding a new permanent exhibition this year, to celebrate a selection of rarely seen works of art that are currently listed among its expansive archives.

Twenty of the ‘hidden’ paintings were shortlisted for the people's choice section of the display, ranging from contemporary works by living artists to 19th century works. All 20 have strong connections to the island - either being by local artists or featuring local landmarks.

The work receiving the most votes from members of the public was ‘The Tree of Life’ by internationally-renowned Guernsey artist Peter Le Vasseur. This painting will join the four next most popular works when the new exhibition opens later this year.

NEW Sark: The world's first Dark Sky Island
The residents of Sark, the smallest of the four main Channel Islands, have always known that their stunning night skies were something to treasure but now they have been given international recognition: Sark has been acknowledged for the quality of its night sky by the International Dark-sky Association (IDA), who have designated it the world's first Dark Sky Island.

Sark has no public street lighting and there are no paved roads and cars, so it does not suffer from the effects of light pollution in the same way as towns and cities do. As a result, the night sky is very dark, with the Milky Way stretching from horizon to horizon, meteors streaking overhead and countless stars on display.

NEW Poems on the Buses... all around Guernsey!
Aiming to take poetry off the page and into the public gaze, the ever-popular Poems on the Buses (POB) scheme has been a feature of Guernsey life for almost three years.

A terrific way for both experienced poets and new talent to share their work, the fourth selection to appear on the buses, considered by many the most exciting so far, has come about as a result of an international competition.

Suggested and administered by local writer and educationalist Jane Mosse, the competition attracted almost 500 entries from as far afield as Finland, Greece, Spain, Portugal and France. In total, 33 will be displayed in buses around Guernsey for 6 months.

TRADE NEWS

Visitor numbers: A reflection of 2010
Despite the recession, the ash cloud episode, the World Cup, as well as economic uncertainty throughout the year, according to the latest available official figures the visitor economy in 2010 showed that the sector remained buoyant – detailed statistics to be released shortly.
Air passenger numbers were on similar levels with 2009, while passengers arriving by sea also showed a slight increase. The accommodation sector reported a high level of occupancy throughout the year in both the hotel and self-catering sectors. In the crucial summer period, July figures were on a par with 2009, August was up 5 per cent (recorded figures showed a 90 per cent occupancy level, which is the highest for a decade) and September also showed an increase of 1 per cent.
Distribution of the UK brochure pack up to the end of September was 121,180. The total number for the whole of 2009 was 91,490, making 2010 a record year and the highest number of brochures ever distributed since records were kept. E-brochure views up to the end of September, by around 30% year-on-year, to 47,228.

£81m revamp for Guernsey Airport
An £81m improvement programme at Guernsey Airport is planned to start later in the year.

The project involves the reconstruction of the runway and the replacement or refurbishment of the drainage system, airfield lighting and other key operational systems. The current airfield boundary will also be extended to the west, to provide longer grass runway end safety areas.

Work on the project is expected to take around two years to complete. The vast majority of work will be undertaken while the airport remains operational. The reconstruction of the runway will be done in stages overnight, and the apron areas and other key systems will be worked on during the day.

The Guernsey Airport Terminal was opened in April 2004 and has been shortlisted for several architectural awards.

Guernsey targets No.1 cruise status
With 76 vessels scheduled to visit this season, the islands of Guernsey hope that this will be enough to once again take the top spot as the most visited British port for day calls.

In 2011, Guernsey will welcome Cunard’s new Queen Elizabeth, which makes its inaugural calls to the island in September. Queen Elizabeth recalls the rich heritage of its predecessor and features Guernsey in two of its itineraries. Other first time visitors include Silversea’s Silver Spirit and Silver Whisper.

With more than 800 years of history St Peter Port, Guernsey’s capital, is one of the most picturesque seaports in Europe. A stunning location for cruise calls, it offers quality port services, professional handling arrangements and is open 24 hours a day. VisitGuernsey offers a reception marquee and ‘meet and greet’ service to welcome cruise passengers, with a range of literature about the island provided.

Tell us what you love about Guernsey...

31. March 2011

What do you love about living in Guernsey?  Perhaps you have a favourite view, a special local restaurant, or a walk you take every day?

Whatever makes Guernsey special for you, VisitGuernsey wants to hear about it.

VisitGuernsey is asking locals to play a part in developing the island’s tourism business with its new Love Guernsey initiative: an online collection of insider information designed to help visitors make the most of their Guernsey experience.

“Last year we launched a campaign encouraging islanders to become ambassadors for Guernsey by passing on pocket-sized Love Guernsey information cards. We are now taking the campaign a big step forward by launching a dedicated web page which will feature islanders’ experiences and suggestions, giving visitors the chance to benefit from genuine local knowledge of Guernsey,” said Jason Moriarty, Trade & Media Relations Manager for VisitGuernsey promotions.

Islanders are encouraged to send their suggestions, stories, photographs, video files, sound clips and even poetry and children’s drawings to a dedicated Love Guernsey e-mail address at love@loveguernsey.net.  All contributions will be reviewed by VisitGuernsey and published as a continually updated news feed on the Love Guernsey web page  -  www.loveguernsey.net.

Contributions from local celebrities and public figures are already being sought for the Love Guernsey site launch, but Mr Moriarty was keen to stress that support from a wide cross-section of islanders is vital to the project.

“Everyone has a valuable contribution to make, the island has a multi generational appeal that we want to showcase,” he said.  “Today’s tourists are sophisticated - they want to enjoy an authentic holiday experience and they place a lot of value on the insights locals can provide.

“The web page itself will become a fantastic vehicle to showcase the lifestyle and attractions of the island.  Further down the line VisitGuernsey will also be able to use the suggestions of islanders in a range of creative ways to enhance our marketing activities.”

Guernsey aiming to develop groups business in 2011

26. January 2011

VisitGuernsey is stepping up its targeting of group business this year as it builds on a successful 2010 in the group travel sector.

The island exhibited at Excursions 2011 in January, its first-ever participation in this event, in partnership with Condor Ferries and Premier Holidays.  This followed last year’s introduction of a dedicated groups e-brochure and a marked increase in interest from specialist operators at the Guernsey Trade Workshop event in May 2010.

“Groups business has been on the increase for us for 18 months or more,” said Jason Moriarty, VisitGuernsey’s Manager – Trade & Media Relations.

“Last year’s initiatives built the levels of interest and the time is right for us to devote more attention to this market and showcase the range of excursions, museums and activities we have to offer.”

With year-round direct flights from nine different UK airports, plus seasonal flights from two further airports and convenient ferry crossings from Poole, Weymouth and Portsmouth, Guernsey is easily accessible from mainland Britain.  The island also offers a range of accommodation to suit groups, from intimate boutique-style properties to larger four-star hotels with more extensive facilities.

The island boasts a wide variety of attractions and experiences, with plenty for all types of traveller.  Heritage is a big draw, with a range of excellent museums focusing on Guernsey’s maritime history, its Occupation by the German forces during World War 2, traditional Guernsey lifestyles and the story of the island’s most famous resident Victor Hugo.  Hugo’s home-in-exile, Hauteville House in St Peter Port, is one of Guernsey’s most compelling attractions, which also include the Sausmarez Manor house and the colourful Little Chapel, thought to be the smallest in the world.

Visitors can also relax at one of Guernsey’s 27 tranquil beaches and bays, enjoy colourful gardens and flower-filled rural lanes, or get active on the island’s 28 miles of spectacular clifftop paths and cycling routes  -  and even try their hands at coasteering and surfing.

Guernsey’s compact size (just 24 square miles) makes all of this easily accessible, and to add even greater variety day excursions to the traffic-free islands of Herm and Sark can be easily arranged.

To download the Guernsey group travel e-brochure organisers should visit Meet Guernsey or call 01481 234567.

VisitGuernsey Events for 2011

24. January 2011

VisitGuernsey is gearing up for the beginning of its tourism season with a number of great events coming up...  This year Guernsey launches a new Literary Festival (12-15 May), showcasing the rich literary talent and tradition that has been the island’s best kept secret for so long.  Guernsey has inspired writers as diverse as Victor Hugo, GB Edwards, Tim Binding, Mervyn Peake, Elizabeth George, James Herbert and, of course, the international bestseller "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society" by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows.

The festival will demonstrate the best that the island has to offer through literary events, performances, themed walks, a murder mystery, workshops and talks for people of all ages and there will be a chance to meet writers such as Annie Barrows and Tim Binding.  English speaking, Guernsey has its own Norman – French dialect and its easygoing charm belies a darker history of strange monoliths, witch burning and Nazi occupation.  French place names and a unique culture make it feel very different to the UK but the truth is, it’s just an hour away by plane from the UK.
