Define the ‘perfect’ family holiday

1. November 2007

If your list includes:

  • A short flight and the option of avoiding airports completely

  • Great, sandy beaches

  • Traditional play ideas (no theme parks or amusement arcades)

  • Family run hotels (no huge chain places) and superb family campsites

  • Good English food (but no fast stuff) and something more creative for adults

  • A safe, secure environment

Then, consider Guernsey for:

A really traditional British holiday experience (with a certain “je ne sais quoi” French flair thrown in), where adults can enjoy lobster meunière and Chablis but where “choosy” children can dine on wholesome English grub.

Some call Guernsey a beautiful time warp where children play in rock pools not in front of a screen, where there’s no congestion charge or traffic hassle, and tea rooms have names like “A Piece of Cake” rather than Starbucks.

Pack the car up with everything…but the kitchen sink and travel by ferry from Weymouth, Portsmouth or Poole or by a flight in under an hour from London (plus multiple regional airports). Guernsey may come very close indeed to that perfect family holiday!
