Yes, on this first day of Spring, around thirty bottle-nose dolphins are swimming close to the shore of the islands of Guernsey and Herm. They’re regular visitors.
Locals and tourists have been delighted to see them close to the south east side of Guernsey and off the Herm coast near to the famous white sand Shell Beach (itself, closely resembling a Caribbean beach).
The local Trident ferry between St Peter Port on Guernsey and Herm island takes just twenty minutes and in recent weeks the pod of dolphins has been swimming alongside the boat jumping in the air.
Jason Moriarty of VisitGuernsey commented “dolphins come most years but it is usually a little later either in May or June and it’s great to see them now as we step into Spring”
So whether the dolphins have come for the plentiful fish supplies in the sea here (no shortage as now in the Med ) or whether something reminded them of more exotic places further field, it doesn’t really matter because, one could say “they chose here”.
