Herm Island agreement announced for the sale or lease

2. July 2008

The Guernsey Government has today announced the transfer of the lease of Herm Island.

Starboard Settlement, a trust that provides financial support for charities in the developing world, has agreed to buy the 40-year lease for an undisclosed sum. The Estate Agent responsible for overseeing the deal has, however, confirmed that the lease sold for considerably less than the £15 million asking price.

A Guernsey resident, John Singer, will now be responsible to the Trustees of Starboard for all activities on Herm. Mr Singer was recommended to the States of Guernsey (Guernsey Government) as a new tenant by Herm Island’s previous tenants, Adrian and Pennie Heyworth, who ran Herm for the past 28 years.  Both parties are delighted at the outcome of the negotiations.

A condition of sale stated that whoever took over the lease would manage Herm Island in the same ‘style’ as the Heyworth’s ensuring that the island’s natural beauty and inherent tranquillity remain intact. It was important for the “outgoing” tenants” to find the best deal for the long term prosperity of Herm rather than sell to the highest bidder for maximum profit. The new tenant has also pledged that the rights of Guernsey residents and visitors to use Herm are protected.

John and his wife, Julia Singer first met in Herm 14 years ago and fell in love with the Island. The couple will take over as island managers at the end of the season.

Mr Singer commented, “The ultimate goal will be to leave all visitors with a very strong desire to return. Herm will remain the jewel in the Bailiwick’s crown.”
