Sark sensation

5. October 2006

From feudal state to the world’s newest democracy overnight. The people of the Channel Island of Sark, Europe's last feudal state, have voted to introduce a fully democratic government.

There was a small but perfectly formed corner of Europe which remained forever feudal - until now, that is, because Sark has voted for democracy.

The islanders, known as the Sarkees, voted this week by a majority of 234 to 184 for a new political system of 28 elected representatives.

Sark has been controlled by a ‘Seigneur’, appointed by the British monarch for some 400 years, in a system dating back to the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. The powers of the Seigneur, Michael Beaumont, will now pass to elected conseillers.

Sark has a population of around 600 and is located 75 miles off England’s southern coast, nine miles east of Guernsey.

A visit to the island is a refreshing step back in time - with no cars and no tarmac, the main mode of transport is by horse and carriage, bike or on foot. Ramble along the dramatic coastline, watch abundant birdlife and stroll around the beautiful gardens of La Seigneurie manor house.

Spring 2007 would be the ideal time to visit the world’s newest democracy!
