So you thought it was just about cream teas

5. June 2009

Spring
A colour splash as spring flowers bloom and the Bluebell woods are an array of indigo blue. Guernsey’s other islands, Herm, Sark and Alderney all open for business now. For bird enthusiasts catch the migrating birds stopping off on Guernsey on their way to Africa.

25 April – 3 May, Spring Floral Festival Week - wild flowers, private and public gardens, guided walks, workshops and lectures

9 – 17 May, Spring Walking Week - a great time to enjoy some guided walks including hedgerow rambling, Towers, Tombs and tales and more. The tides start to change allowing walks across the causeway through the sea to Lihou island.

Guernsey’s attractions open in Spring – but we’re talking Shipwreck Museum, Hauteville House, and other traditional places : there’s nothing Disney-esque here.

Summer
Almost everything is outdoors now, including theatre, food and more flowers. Enjoy the ocean!

Days are long and travelling time from the UK is short, and with far less hassle than a trip half way round the world. It’s a time for beach BBQ’s, fish and chips washed down with local cider while sitting on the sea walls, plus adrenaline rush sports including windsurfing, surfing, abseiling, kayaking (equipment and instructor provided). For a more leisurely experience explore the west coast by horse and carriage.

10- 13 June, Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night under the stars at the magnificent Castle Cornet. Take a picnic or have a bite in the Castle restaurant before the performance.

All of July,
Guernsey’s Seafood Festival - the Med may be getting short of seafood but it’s plentiful here. Across the island, restaurants offer special seafood menus

Autumn

Enjoy the slower pace, yet swimming and eating outside can still be enjoyed.

5-13 September, Autumn Walking Week and yes, they do it again (you heard about " New York New York, so good they named it twice")? Walk off the fabulous cream teas along our cliff paths and bays, across the heaths, around historic sights. An extensive programme of walks, some of them themed with accredited guides, from easy strolls to serious hikes.

16-18 October, Ballroom and Latin American dance festival – champion dancers from around the world at this "Strictly Guernsey…" event

1 October – 12 November, Tennerfest – this six week fest where over 160 participating restaurants offer menus from £10. Long-time tradition, new recession buster

Winter
On 1 January, the first ormering tide brings people to collect these utterly Guernsey crustaceans from rock pools in baskets (used in the famous ormer casserole) and, later, enjoy cosy pubs and Guernsey’s "roast and roam" (roast lunches by the fire followed by a walk).

What else ? Day Christmas shopping trips to Herm, "art for beginners" day course at a local gallery (materials and lunch included) and art galleries are open.

Fabulous cream teas ? Of course. plus walks, flowers, beaches, seafood, water, adrenaline-rush, dance and log fires. Shopping all seasons , low duty and where the pound is still the pound not just a fraction of the euro. The summary of Guernsey bliss - year round.
