Guernsey develops its wellness offering with new retreats

In response to the growing trend for healthy holidays closer to home, Guernsey is developing its wellness offering for travellers with new packages that make the most of the island’s natural surroundings. With spectacular coastal scenery, fresh sea air and an abundance of local produce, Guernsey and its sister isles of Sark and Herm are the ideal setting for a short break escape to recharge and rejuvenate. Wellness and wellbeing retreats are being held on the islands, offering opportunities to eat healthily, get active in the outdoors, practice yoga and mindfulness, and return home looking and feeling refreshed. Here’s a selection of the next retreats to take place on the three islands.

Wellness at Old Government House Hotel in Guernsey
11 - 15 May; 25 - 29 September; 14 – 18 October 2017
The five-star OGH in Guernsey’s capital St Peter Port is offering a four-day wellness package that combines exercise, the great outdoors, healthy dining, and mindfulness. The itinerary includes three yoga workshops incorporating Hatha, Nidra, Yin, and Vinyasa disciplines, stand-up paddle boarding at one of the island’s beaches, a doodling session for mindfulness, and optional guided walks, runs and kettlebell classes. A healthy breakfast is offered every morning featuring juices such as ‘Stress Down’ and ‘Young Blood’, homemade buckwheat granola and butternut squash pancakes, and dinner is included every evening at The Brasserie restaurant. Wellness guests also have the opportunity to have optional consultations, such as food intolerance testing and hypnosis, and a session with a personal trainer. The hotel’s gym, outdoor heated pool and spa with two whirlpools, sauna, steam room and chill-out lounge are also available.

The package is available from £345 per room, based on two people sharing a Classic Double Room. The price includes all activities mentioned above, breakfast and dinner. Additional nights are priced at the hotel’s best available rate. (Subject to availability; terms and conditions apply).

Zen Warrior Retreat in Sark
16 – 18 June 2017
On the island of Sark, a 45 minute ferry ride from Guernsey, life is about kicking back and enjoying nature. PowerYoga Guernsey is bringing a Zen Warrior Retreat to the island with five yoga masterclasses over three days, enabling students to enhance their yoga practice in relaxing and restorative surroundings. Incorporating opening yoga ‘Poetic Flow’, Sun Salutations, ‘Tai Chi Flow’, Budokon Principles and Budokon Yoga Flow, the masterclasses are held at the beautiful Sark Hall, with healthy, wholesome meals offered after each class. Accommodation is available at Pourquoi Pas Guest House, a traditional Scandinavian style log cabin located 15 minutes walk from Sark village and boasting coastal views and cliff top scenery.

The Sark Zen Warrior Retreat is priced from £130, which includes all classes and two nights B&B at Pourquoi Pas Guest House (sharing).

Live Long and Strong Wellness Retreat in Sark
16 – 19 June 2017

Sark, known as the island that time forgot, is the perfect location for Thrive Coaching and Training’s next retreat, discovering the world’s best practices for living a long and healthy life. The retreat explores the Blue Zones Principles for living a long life with workshops on how to change mindset to live a more fulfilled life; stress, anxiety and burnout; and wellbeing, happiness and social connectedness. The retreat also includes yoga, meditation, mindfulness practices and Tai Chi at Sark Henge.

The retreat is priced from £299 per person (sharing) or £379 per person (single). The price includes all workshops, a choice of two therapies, yoga and meditation classes, breakfast, lunch, return boat fare from Guernsey and luggage transfers.

Yoga and Wellbeing Retreat in Herm
20 - 22 October 2017

A 20 minute ferry ride from Guernsey, the tiny car-free island of Herm lends itself to total relaxation, where even playing the radio in public areas is banned. PowerYoga Guernsey is holding a two day retreat on the island with eight hours of yoga tuition including Asana (postures), Pranayama (breath-work), meditation, Yin Yoga (restorative) and Yoga Nidra (deep relaxation). Based at The White House Hotel, the only hotel on the island, the retreat includes healthy and delicious vegetarian breakfast, lunch and evening meals, and unlimited refreshments of herbal infusions, teas, coffee and fruit. There’s also free time to explore Herm’s sandy beaches and coastal paths, with plenty of running, walking and swimming opportunities, and optional treatments.

The Herm Yoga and Wellbeing PowerYoga Retreat is priced at £289 (sharing) and £339 (single) if fully paid before the end of July, or £309 and £359 thereafter. The price includes all yoga tuition, all meals, unlimited refreshments, and return ferry to Herm Island from Guernsey.

Guernsey is less than an hour’s flight from the UK. Aurigny and Flybe fly to Guernsey from many UK airports, including London Gatwick, London Stansted, London City, Birmingham and Manchester. Return flights with Aurigny from London Gatwick are priced from £100.

The Isle of Sark Shipping Company has up to five sailings per day in summer from Guernsey to Sark. Journey time is 45 minutes. Return adult fare is £28.65, return child fare is £13.30. Trident Ferries has up to eight departures a day in peak season from Guernsey to Herm. Return adult fare is £13, return child far is £6.50.
