Quality Development News

There are some important developments on the horizon that will impact significantly on the way in which we carry out our role in future:

• Boarding Permits

Marketing & Tourism is in the process of modernising our IT system, so from next year you will be able apply and pay for boarding permits online, and update the details of your accommodation the same way. More information about how this will work will be circulated online and with the invitation to apply for a permit that will be sent out to all current permit holders next February

• Discretionary Accommodation Awards

Discretionary Awards for accommodation include the Breakfast Award, and Gold or Silver Service and Hospitality Accolades. Two years ago a free Taste Assessment of the dining provision for staying guests was introduced as part of the grading assessment for serviced visitor accommodation sites, with Gold or Silver Awards recommended, depending on the score achieved. A simplified version of this is now to be fully incorporated into the accommodation grading assessment process.

The dining offer for staying guests is already tested during the grading assessment visit to determine the star rating. Where a quality of provision is experienced by the assessor that is significantly above and beyond that expected for the star rating, a Guest Dining Award will be recommended. These awards will not be classified into Gold or Silver, but will clearly demonstrate those premises where the standard expected of the star rating has been significantly surpassed.

Again, more detailed information about this will be provided in the New Year here and you will be notified in advance by email.

• Voluntary Quality Accreditation Programmes – the quality assurance programmes offered by Marketing and Tourism have evolved steadily over nearly twenty years, helping our tourism product to keep in touch with industry standards, best practice and visitor expectations in the wider world.  Working closely with our partners at Quality in Tourism, we are taking a fresh look at our non-statutory accreditation programmes, to ensure they remain relevant to the visitor. As a result we are starting to bring them all together in 2019, under a single brand which will badged as The Guernsey Visitor Experience. More information will follow in the New Year.

Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

Peter and Marilyn, the Quality Development Team.
